Digital mirror replacement system for commercial vehicles

For drivers of commercial vehicles, being able to see behind them is vital for safety. Now the camera-based solution developed by Bosch in cooperation with MEKRA Lang not only replaces the two rear-view mirrors on either side but also features additional benefits thanks to its innovative technology. In the digital vision system, the cameras are mounted externally on the driver’s cab and the displays are integrated in the cab’s interior. Eliminating the side mirrors improves the driver’s forward view and reduces aerodynamic drag at the same time, thus cutting fuel consumption by up to two percent.

In certain driving situations, conventional mirrors do not always allow all the relevant areas to be kept in view. With the digital vision system, the view can be adapted to the driving situation, allowing the trailer to remain visible even in tight curves, for example, and allowing the driver to maneuver safely. The legal requirements for the field of view are also taken into account.

An eye on the situation

The system’s digital technology furthermore makes it possible to provide a situation-specific display: on the highway, the driver will see further behind the vehicle; in cities, the viewing angle increases to expand the driver’s field of view; and at night, the enhanced contrast improves visibility.
